The Frost & Sullivan whitepaper titled Strategic Assessment of Chinese Automakers' Globalization Plans forecasts the timing of Chinese vehicle manufacturers’ entry to key global markets. It helps North American automotive industry participants to strategize and capitalize on the resulting opportunities and challenges. This deliverable offers insights into key parameters that define the historical growth, export market penetration plans, and partnership arrangement for each of the major Chinese vehicle manufacturers. This study identifies major manufacturers and compares their revenue size and vehicle production. It highlights the key participants and identifies companies that North American participants should collaborate with.
North American Automakers Need to Sit up and Take Notice of China’s Growing Clout in the Global Automotive Market
China’s notoriety as a manufacturer of inferior quality products is fast receding, as the country is gradually evolving into a global manufacturing powerhouse for consumer and technology goods. Today, Chinese manufacturers support global markets in some of the most technologically advanced product areas and are scaling new heights in production volumes and capabilities. However, China has not yet fully replicated this success in vehicle manufacturing. Automakers in North America and Europe do not anticipate any immediate threat from Chinese passenger cars.
China is readying for the North American and European markets by chalking out detailed globalizations plans. Manufacturers face a myriad challenges such as high barriers to entry and export/import, prohibitive manufacturing costs, need for enhanced safety and performance, significant R&D costs, as well as political implications. Chinese manufacturers have strategies for each of these concerns and have already been implementing them with gritty determination.
"While non-Chinese automotive manufacturers are expanding production and sales within China, local vehicle manufacturers are executing a systematic penetration of the global vehicle market," says the analyst of this research service. "Compared to just five or ten years ago, Chinese automakers are significantly larger by manufacturing capacity and revenues and are preparing to take on the export markets."
North American automotive-related industries would do well to sit up and take notice of China’s growing clout in the automotive industry, considering the fact that the export of Chinese-manufactured vehicles had increased by 78.6 percent between 2005 and 2006. Chinese automakers have already announced entry dates for the North American markets, and by 2009, North American and European consumers will have the opportunity to be up front and personal with Chinese vehicle brands.
"The largest of China’s manufacturers have documented market penetration programs, many of which hinge on joint venture partnerships with North American-, European-, and Asia-based sponsors," notes the analyst. "These sponsors have vested interests in the Chinese company’s global success and it is the commitment, political savvy, and financial resources of the partnership that will ultimately determine when and how Chinese vehicles will enter the North American market."
